Click to share
With the Pure Portal, we strive to provide the best possible support in disseminating your institution’s research. One component of this is making it easier for you and your researchers to share their work, and have their work shared by others, across media platforms. As well of this, we want to be able help you measure the impact of your research shared across these channels.
Many of our previous generation of custom portals included a share functionality, making this a widely requested addition to the Pure Portal. In our first iteration, we have provided support for some of the most popular and ubiquitous global platforms. This was done in consultation with our clients, via the Community Slack platform. We intend to develop this feature further across multiple releases, with a focus on increasing the tracking and reporting functionality, as well as adding support for additional platforms, in order to better meet the needs of our diverse, global client group. With that in mind, your feedback on how we should further develop this feature is greatly appreciated!
The Click to Share functionality is disabled by default. To enable, go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Styling and Layout > Enable Social share links
When enabled, Click to Share will display as a sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen. It will be shown on the content pages of all active content families on your portal (e.g. Research Outputs, Projects, Equipment, etc.)
To use the feature, while on a content page simply click the icon for the platform to which you want to
share the content. If you are not already logged in to the platform via your browser, you will be prompted to do so. Once logged in, a template post will be generated, inviting the reader to “Check out” the content on your portal, including a link to the page. It is possible to edit this text before posting. The “name” of your portal is taken from the Customer Name configuration. This can be edited from the Pure Portal Configuration page.
The compatible platforms are:
Email (shared using a mailto: link, with the content title as the email subject)
Twitter
Facebook
LinkedIn
The URLs that are created include a “UTM” code. This code can be used to track how often shared content is clicked on, via your Google Analytics account. You can explore this data via the "Acquisition" tab within Google Analytics:
There are various analyses that can be run on Click to Share content, using their acquisition analysis functionality. Here are just a few examples:
Filtering on the title of the content (e.g. the Research Output or Project name), you can see how often a piece of content has been visited via Click to Share links
Filtering on the specific “source” you are interested in (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, etc.), you can see all traffic received via Click to Share links via this medium
Comparing how often different content types are reached via Click to Share links
We’d be excited to hear which analyses are most useful to you, and how we could support you further!
"Job description" and "Job title" unification on profile pages
We have acted to improve the way "Job title" and "Job description" information is used on Pure Portal profile pages.
Previously, only data from the "Job description" field was shown. If this field was blank, no information was shown. However, we have seen that many institutions populate the "Job title" field with comparable data instead, which is currently not used publicly.
From this release, by default, we will now show "Job title"in relation to the staff association, if it's present. If not, we'll fall back to the "job description" (which is being used now).
The information is presented on the Pure Portal profile page together with the organization it's related to, in the same manner as on the search results page.
In order to maximize the visibility of your research assets, we continuously work to promote your Pure Portal pages via leading search engines. To this end, we have made the following upgrades.
XML Sitemap
In order to ensure your content is indexed quickly and effectively by search engines, sites must make it simple for their web crawlers (programmes or automated scripts which browse the web in a methodical, automated manner) to find and understand their online content. Prevailing current guidance points to the utilisation of an XML sitemap as the best way to achieve that. So we have implemented this solution to replace the HTML sitemaps we were using previously.
Google Search Console (GSC) verification
In order to help you better track your Portal's SEO performance, we have made it possible for you to verify ownership of your Pure Portal in Google Search Console (GSC). GSC (previously known as Google Webmaster Tools) is a web service by Google, provided free of charge for webmasters, which allows them to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites on Google and Google Scholar.
Google Search Console enables you to directly monitor the SEO performance of your portal. In order to access GSC for your portal, you must first verify your ownership of the site. There are a variety of possible ways of doing this, and we have decided the easiest way to support verification is through using your Google Analytics tracking ID (the same one that is already added to the portal for Google Analytics). This can be done as follows:
1. Create a Google Analytics account (if you do not have one already). 2. Get your Google Tracking ID. 3. Paste this into your Portal configuration (Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Google Analytics).
Some clients, particularly those based in the US, will have Google Analytics accounts already administered by us directly. In these cases, verification will not be possible yourselves, and you will see this screen:
If you encounter this, please submit a ticket via Jira and we will verify your portal on your behalf, giving access to GSC on the email address you provide.
In response to user feedback, we have made a small change to the way "Public CVs" are displayed on the Pure Portal.
Previously, the link visual was hard-coded as "My Public CV - dd-mm-yy", with the dates being the creation date (not the most recent update date) of the CV:
Drawbacks here are a lack of differentiation when different CVs are also shown (for instance, and "Teaching Portfolio" in some territories), and that the creation date is unnecessary. It can create the impression CVs are not up-to-date. To resolve this, we will now use the user-provided "CV title" from Pure as the link visual. The character limit to fit the title on one line is 24 characters – the vast majority of CV titles are within this length. Longer titles wrap onto the following lines, as shown below.
Corresponding authors indicated in the Pure Portal
In the previous major release, we introduced corresponding author tags in Pure. The corresponding author of a publication is a key enabler of how the publication is disseminated to a wider audience, serving as the contact person for the output. With this release, we are rolling out these tags to the Pure Portal also. This means that wherever corresponding author tags are used in Pure, they will be visible on the Portal, so it is apparent who to contact for follow-up on a given output.
When the corresponding author configuration is enabled in Pure and a corresponding author is set for a research output, the corresponding author is indicated on the research output page like so:
Funder changes on Project pages - adding logos and hiding funding amounts
We are working to make it easier to add images to represent your content in the Pure Portal. In this release, we have added the ability to add logos for funders onto Project pages. Further developments in this area will follow in later releases.
In addition, we have added a configuration to make it possible to show funders on project pages, without needing to also show the associated funding amounts.
Adding funder logos
Legislation in some jurisdictions requires recipients of funding from (supra)national organisations to display the organisations logo when referencing the project. For this reason, we have focused first on fulfilling this requirement. In doing so, we have made adjustments to our data model, laying the foundation for us to more easily add images for other entities.
For more information on how to add funder logos, please consult the Administration section of this version of the release notes.
The logo is displayed alongside the funder, as shown:
Hiding funding amounts
Previously, the only way to hide funding amounts from a Project page was to hide the funding information from the page entirely. We’ve now added a configuration option for funders where you can show the funding, but hide the specific amount. To do this, go to Administrator > Unified Project Model > Portal configuration, and set "Display funding amount information" to "Disabled":
Which will display as seen below:
Please note: Display of funding information will remain enabled by default.
Previously, if a document attached to a research output was under an active embargo, all information pertaining to the embargoed document was hidden.
This doesn't make much sense as, even though the document of course should not be made available, it can be very helpful to the user to know:
1) that there is an embargoed document attached
2) the duration of the embargo and
3) the title of the document,
This information could potentially even help the user retrieve the document from another source, for instance via a "Request for copy" to the author.
These three fields will now be shown for embargoed documents on the Pure Portal. This provides more utility to the Portal visitor, while still obeying the terms of the embargo.
Please note: This change does not affect "Restricted" documents.
As part of this release we will be updating the version of Elasticsearch powering the Pure Portal search engine. This is essential due to Elasticsearch discontinuing support for our current version. In order to complete this upgrade, all Pure data must be re-indexed, which will necessitate pausing the connection between the Pure Portal and Pure. This must be done on a region-by-region basis, and the Portal will not update with new content during this time. We expect this to take roughly 24 hours.
Please be aware that during this period all updates, including download data, will still be collected and will be queued, ready for when the connection is re-established after the upgrade. Please note also that access to attached files will not be affected. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
For clients we host, we plan this process will begin at the following times:

For self-hosted clients, the process will begin the day prior to the upgrade of your Pure Portal.
You will be able to follow the progress via the Pure Client Space, where we will provide updates and any additional information.
The aforementioned upgrade to the latest Elasticsearch version has also afforded us the opportunity to tweak our 'profile similarity' algorithm. As a result of these changes you should (generally speaking) see more results per person as well as slight changes in the ordering when sorting by relevance.
In line with earlier communication, with the release of Pure version 5.14.0, we will be completing the switch over for Pure Portals to use a newer version of our web service API. Depending on your configuration, some action may be required from your side for your Pure Portal to continue to update. Most affected clients should also have been notified by email. The information presented here is the same.
If you are hosted by us, this is just to notify you that we will be adding an API key when we upgrade you to 5.14.0. No action is required.
If you are self-hosted, you will need to generate an API key for the new API and share it with us. This is possible at any time after you have upgraded to Pure 5.13. We recommend you carry this out as soon as possible. The steps are as follows:
A user with admin privileges goes to Administrator > Security > Api Keys
Click Add new API key (see Fig. 1)
Toggle Administrator account to 'On' (See Fig. 2)
Copy the API key shown (Fig. 2)
Click Save at the bottom of the screen (Fig. 2)
Create a JIRA support ticket, providing the API key to us.
Fig. 1
Fig. 2
Once you have upgraded to Pure version 5.14, you will need to use the new API for the Pure Portal to function. If you upgrade to 5.14 without this key, the Portal will no longer update until the key is added.
If you are running an earlier version of Pure, and have no immediate plans to upgrade, no action is necessary until you wish to upgrade to version 5.14.
We are very pleased to announce the addition of download statistics to the Pure Portal. Download counts of files attached to research outputs will now be displayed on the research output pages and in search results.
If an output has zero downloads, no figure will be displayed, in line with how citation counts currently work.
If there are multiple attachments associated with one output, the download count is aggregated.
The displays for citations, Plum metrics and Altmetrics have been repositioned slightly in order to accommodate the addition of download metrics. see screenshots below:
The download total that is presented is based on the download count stored in Pure. This differs from the set-up in some Custom Portals, meaning there may be some lag in the Pure Portal numbers.
Moreover, the Pure Portal method includes deduplication of multiple downloads within a single visitor session, and additional screening against bots, thus providing a more accurate number. This is another reason the Pure Portal total may appear lower than in a previous Custom Portal.
The Pure Portal number is updated whenever the 'Filter Download Information' job is run. We recommend setting this job to run nightly.
Download Statistics are enabled by default, and can be disabled by going to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Research Output > Metrics
Expansion of download statistics to further content types will be considered for future releases.
We've added a degree of control over our search algorithm. You now have two options for the default protocol used for Portal searches.
The changes refer specifically to what we refer to as the "default" search behavior. By this, we mean the type of search that is run if the user does not specifically select either a "concept", "free text" or "copy/paste" search from the menu, as shown below:
Until 5.14, the search logic was not configurable, and set as such:
If a concept phrase is detected in the search string, run a "concept" search, Otherwise, run a "free text" search, for strings that match the search term.
With this release, we are providing a second option: that the default search behavior is simply to run a "free text" search. Feedback from some customers suggests this is more in line with their expected behavior, hence us adding the option.
The behaviour can be configured by an admin. Go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration, select Free text search and Save.
Once the Portal has resynchronized, the default search behavior for all visitors to you Portal will be changed.
Please note:
The default behavior for search has not changed - it is the same behavior as in previous versions of Pure. If you do not want to change the way search currently works, no action is necessary
Hiding the Collaboration Map on individual profiles
In response to client feedback, we have added a configuration option for our Collaboration Map on Pure Portals, so they can be disabled for any particular person's profile.
In order to make use of this option, an administrator must first enable personal configuration options in the Portal. To do this, go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Content Types > Persons, and ensure the box Enable personal configuration options for the portal is checked, then click Save.
Once this is enabled, personal users (and their proxies) can make changes for individual profiles.
To do this, while logged into a personal user account:
Go to Personal Overview and click Edit profile....
On the Portal profile tab toggle Show collaboration map on profile to Off.
Click Save.
Once the Portal has resynchronized, the Collaboration Map will now be hidden on this person's profile.
With 5.14 we have made it possible to use a Portal "Sort name" within Pure Portals. This allows users to specify a different name to use when displaying alphabetically sorted lists of researchers. This is useful if, for instance, the Last Name includes a prefix. So for the name "Ludwig van Beethoven", even though the Last Name is set as "van Beethoven", it can be sorted by "B", not "V". This functionality was previously only available in custom Portals.
To add a sort name:
As a personal user first go to Personal Overview and click Edit profile...to open the Person editor window.
On the Metadata tab > Personal identification section, click Add name variant....
Select Sort name from the dropdown menu and add the alternative name you would like to use for sorting, then click Create. It is not necessary to add a First Name.
Click Save for the Person editor window.
Once the Portal has resynchronized, the Person will be sorted under the "Sort name" on the Portal, like so:
During this release we have fixed a bug pertaining to our "Willingness to talk to media" option. In some cases, this bug caused made the option to signal willingness to talk to media available to personal users even if the feature was disabled on an admin level.
If had this option disabled, and wish to keep it disabled, no action is necessary.
If you had it disabled, but want to enable it (for instance, as it was being used anyway due to the bug, and you are fine with that), you can do so by going to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Content types > Persons, click Edit and check the box marked Enable Willingness to talk to media then click Save.
Show only Dataset 'Creators' in citation suggestion
It's now possible to configure on Pure Portal Dataset pages whether the suggested citation includes all contributors to the dataset, or only those with the role 'Creator'.
To configure this, go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration , then 'Dataset citations' section.
Please note:
This setting only effects the rendering of the citation suggestion, and does not change how people associated with datasets are displayed elsewhere on the Portal.
The default setting remains to show all contributors.
We regularly hear from our users that the Pure Portal configuration and content update process can be confusing and that it should be easier to identify what updates are in progress and when changes will go live. To this end, we have worked extensively this release on making this possible.
These changes affect only Pure Portal clients, and not Custom Portals or Standard/Generic Portals. The overview is visible to Administrator users only.
Our Portal update process works as follows:
Changes are collected into batches of updates, which are processed together.
While one batch is being processed, all new changes that occur are collated into a second batch.
This batch will continue to build up until the previous update is complete. Once the previous update is complete, the next batch is processed.
For Pure Portal customers, the new 'Update overview' can be accessed via Administrator > Pure Portal. The location will vary for Custom/Generic Portal customers - please let the Support Team know if you have any problems locating it.
The 'Update status overview' is broken down into two major sections.
'Update in progress'
Update 'Log'
Update in progress
This shows the current progress of the application of the changes in the current update batch.
It displays the number of items in the batch out of the remaining total. The progress bar shows the percentage completion for the batch, based on estimates of how long each content type takes to update.
Update log
The update log shows an summary of the most recent Portal updates (max. 10).
By checking the start time of the current update in progress, you can get an idea of whether your recent changes should be in that batch, or are in the queued batch. Any changes you make after the start time of the current update in progress begins will go into the queued batch. We are unable to give detailed information on the full estimated time before new changes are live on the Portal, but this should give you a rough idea.
The timezone for start times is based on the timezone your system runs on. For locally hosted Pure systems, this will be your local timezone, that you have set for your Pure instance. For customers that we host in Amazon (the integrated version), the timezone is set to the your local timezone. For customers that we host fully in Amazon, the timezone will be set automatically to UTC and unfortunately cannot be changed. This is due to technical limitations currently and we apologise for the inconvenience. We may be able to resolve this at a later date.
The 'Details' column shows a more precise breakdown of the items included in the individual batch. You can see the content types included, and the total number of items of each content type. If there are more items than we can show in the table row, you can click 'Show more' for an expanded overview:
As first announced with our Pure 5.9.0 release (June 2017), we are switching to an upgraded web service API for the Pure Portals as of this current release. As such, we have completed the necessary work to prepare Pure Portals for the switch. We expect the upgraded web service to result in overall greater stability and performance. We also now have clearer documentation, with a more consistent, versatile platform.
In order to make it easier for researchers to control and adjust the information on their Pure Portal profile page, we have added the ability for users to navigate to the relevant sections in the Pure back-end directly from their Portal profile page.
When a user logs into the backend of Pure the first time following the upgrade to 5.12, a cookie is added to their browser. From then on, when they visit their own profile page in the Pure Portal, the cookie is detected, prompting edit buttons to display on their profile. If no cookie is detected, the buttons are not shown.
There are buttons for "Edit my profile", "Edit my fingerprint" and one to edit highlighted content for each (active) content family. The buttons are displayed within each of these sections on the Portal profile. Each button brings the user directly to the specific area of the Pure back-end to edit the relevant information. For more information on how to add highlighted content, please see the section on Configurations in the 5.10.0 release notes.
Pure Portal Edit button
Takes you to ...
the Person editor
the Fingerprint editor
the Person editor
Notes:
The edit buttons will only be shown on the user's own Portal profile page, and not on the pages of other users.
This function is available to users only if Personal Configurations are enabled; more information on Personal Configurations and how to enable them is available from 5.10.0 Configurations section.
The edit button will with this release only show in English, regardless of the language of the Portal. This will be fixed in the first minor release (5.12.1) in approximately one month from now.
Data protection policy footer link (GDPR requirement)
In order to ensure compliance with new EU laws on personal data use (GDPR), you can now add a link to the footer of Portal pages to direct users to your institution's data protection policy.
Go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Styling & layout > Help. To enable, toggle the "Data protection policy footer link" to "On", and add the URL for the corresponding page on your website.
In response to feedback, we have made it easier to display former organizational affiliations for Persons on their profile pages.
The option to display former organizations can be configured by the Administrator. If enabled, it will be applied to all Persons within their instance of Pure who have former organizational affiliations listed in Pure. This configuration is disabled by default.
To enable, go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Families > Persons > Person Filtering. Here, deselect “Only show active organisation associations”
Note:
Changing this setting on a published Portal will re-publish the entire portal.
Create "Pretty" (user-friendly) URLs for profile pages
In order to make personal profile page URLs more readable for both humans and search engines, we have introduced functionality to generate 'Pretty' URLs based on the Person's Pure username. For example:
From:
To
:
To generate human-readable URL (permalink) for Persons’ Portal profile pages, run the "Pretty URL Update" job at Administrator > Jobs > Pretty URL Update.
Notes:
The job only processes Person records that have been added since the job was last run.
Starting 11 June 2018, Google are implementing a new pay-as-you-go pricing plan for their Google Maps, Routes, and Places services. Some of you may already have received communications from Google on this subject. As part of these changes, Google will no longer allow access to Maps capabilities without an API key. This has implications for the way we call location services on Equipment, Projects, and other pages (depending on your version and configuration of Pure).
For Pure Portal customers, these changes should have no direct effect and no action will be required. Pure will set up a billing account with Google, linked to our API key. If you encounter any issues, please reach out to Support. For more information and background to these changes, see the Google Maps pricing page.
For Custom Portal customers, it will be necessary to get an API key from Google, if you don't have one already. To check if you have an API key already, see our guide in the Pure 5.7.0 release notes. It is also necessary to set up a billing account with Google to continue to use these services. Google allows for $200 dollars of free usage per month; after this point, usage will be charged per request in accordance with Google’s pricing plan. We anticipate the free usage limit should cover the full usage of most customers, and it is possible to set usage quotas and billing alerts with Google to protect against unexpected increases. If you exceed the usage limits of a given Maps API, the API will return an error message. For further information and support on making these changes, Google have a full guide and transition walkthrough. You can also contact their Sales Support Team.
The 'Geolocation' Job that harvests geolocations based on address information in Pure has been updated. The number of requests for geolocations has been lowered from 100 an hour to 50 (to adhere to Google's updated maximum number of free requests per month), and it is now possible to toggle the job on and off.
If you have any questions about how any of this might affect you, please feel free also to contact the Pure Support Team.
As previously communicated, we provide support for only the three most recent major releases of the Pure Portal. This means that as of the launch of Pure 5.12.0, versions 5.9.0 and earlier will not be officially supported by the Pure team. Further detail is available in the Upgrade notes.
To support the updates made to the Facilities/Equipment model (see above), this release also includes display changes and enhancements to Facilities/Equipment in the Pure Portal. This includes:
New support for the display of multiple photos
Revised hierarchical view, including a configuration to determine the default view (hierarchical or grid)
Overall layout enhancements, including updated placement of contact and access information
Photos
Multiple photos can be uploaded in the Facilities/Equipment content editor, for display in the Pure Portal.
Open the Facilities/Equipment editor window > Metadata tab and scroll down to the Photo section, select Add file...
A pop-up will appear that will allow the Editor to choose the photo that they wish to upload. If you want to upload multiple photos, follow this process multiple times.
Press Save at the bottom of the editor.
The photo(s) are now made visible in the Pure Portal.
If multiple photos have been uploaded, they can be viewed via the scroll arrows in the photo section.
The photos can also be enlarged in the Portal by simply clicking on the photo.
Grid/Hierarchical view
A new configuration is available that enables you to set the view for Facilities/Equipment in the Pure Portal.
Open the Administrator > Pure Portal tab.
Within the open tab, click the Configuration tab.
In the Families section, click Edit next to Facilities/Equipment. The following settings are exposed:
In the Overview section, there is a new Show hierarchical list view as default check box. By default, this box is un-checked, and the Portal will display Equipment with the standard Grid view as the initial view. If checked, the Portal will display Equipment in the Hierarhical View as the initial view.
The Metrics section is not applicable to Equipment/Facilities.
Click Save to ensure your changes are saved.
Layout enhancements
Access to Facility/Equipment
Contact Information, Hierarchy, Terms of loan/booking, and Related Content are now visible in the right hand portion of the page
Map
If an address has been input for the Facility/Equipment, the location of the Facility/Equipment is displayed in the Portal using Google Maps.
Fingerprint and Search Improvements
As part of the continuing effort to improve fingerprinting and search, we are happy to include the following improvements in the 5.11 release.
Prizes are now a fingerprintable piece of content, performed automatically once a Title and Description have been added for a Prize.
Weightings can now also be applied to fingerprintable content to adjust the extent to which different content types contribute to Persons' overall fingerprints. Prizes, Research Interest Statements and Research Output fingerprints can be weighted to provide a more accurate, and holistic fingerprint.
It is now possible to configure the Institutional Home Page to not display Concepts.
Addition of Prizes to fingerprinting
Prizes are now a fingerprintable piece of content, performed automatically once a Title and Description have been added for a Prize.
Prizes have been added to fingerprints in order to:
expand the fingerprintable content in Pure.
include more concepts to a Person's aggregate fingerprint, in the case that they are performing important work that has been recognized by a Prize but not necessarily captured by traditional Research Outputs.
better represent researcher expertise beyond Research Outputs.
Prizes are automatically fingerprinted if both a Title and Description (Abstract) are present. Once fingerprinted, Prizes will also appear in a separate tab as part of the Concept search functionality in the Pure Portal.
It is also possible for us to configure which content sources are included Persons' fingerprints. If you would like us to make a change, please contact pure-support@elsevier.com.
Weighting of fingerprint signals
With this release, it is now possible to assign weightings to the content that make up the fingerprint (Research Output, Prizes and Research Interest Statement), enabling you greater control over which content contributes most to Person fingerprints.
This feature can help better represent a Person's true expertise, and allow for a more accurate fingerprint visualization and Concept search result set.
The weightings control how heavily valued a this source is in a Person's fingerprint. Each content type has a aggregated fingerprint created (i.e. a fingerprint for Research Output, and a fingerprint for Prizes). It is the aggregated fingerprint that is weighted against each other in order to provide a holistic fingerprint that best represents expertise. Once set, the weightings are applied to all Persons within the Pure installation and will appear on the Portal after it is next updated from Pure.
By default, the weighting values have been set to 1.0 for Research Outputs, 1.0 for Research Interest Statement and 1.0 for Prizes.
This feature is visible the Administrator, and can be viewed as follows:
Open the Administrator > Fingerprint > Configuration tab
In the Selected sources for Fingerprints section, the weighting given to each source is shown.
Configurable number of Concepts displayed now includes zero
On occasion, an institution may not wish to display the aggregated fingerprint for the institution on the Pure Portal home page as it is felt it does not accurately reflect the breadth of research undertaken at the institution.
In order to address this requirement, we have expanded the ability to configure the number of concepts displayed on the Home Page fingerprint to include zero.
Open the Administrator > Pure Portal tab.
Within the open tab, make sure you are on the Styling & layout sub-tab.
Scroll to the Maps section.
Select the number of Concepts that you wish to display - if 0 is selected, no concepts will be displayed on the Pure Portal home page.
We have enhanced the Personal configurations introduced in 5.10 in order to provide clarity and a better user experience. These include:
Improved user interface to enable Personal users more easily identify their Primary organizational affiliation
When selecting content for highlighting, only content with Visibility = 'Public' or 'Campus' will be available for selection
Research output metrics sources must first be enabled by the Administrator in order to be selectable for display in the Personal configurations
Primary organizational affiliation visibility
In this release we have improved the Personal user's Portal Profile editor in order specifically flag the primary organizational affiliation (as per their Person record). When an individual wishes to highlight select organizational affiliation(s) for display (when multiple affiliations exist), they will now be able to easily see which one is their Primary affiliation.
Content visibility
When selecting content for highlighting (via Personal Configurations in Portal Profile), only content with Visibility = 'Public' or 'Campus (restricted to IP range view only)' will be available for selection. Content that is marked 'Backend' or 'Confidential' will be marked as such, and will not be able to be selected for highlighting.
Metrics sources
Research Output metrics sources must first be enabled by the Administrator to be displayed in the Pure Portal. Once a source is enabled, the Personal user can edit their personal Portal configurations to disable that source (e.g. to not display H-index or citation counts on their personal Portal page).
As an Administrator, to select the metrics you wish to enable, go to Administrator > Pure Portal > Configuration > Research Output > Click Edit > Citations
As a Personal user, to select which of the enabled metrics to display on the personal Portal page:
Navigate to your Personal overview screen and click 'Edit profile'.
In the Person editor window, click the Portal profile tab.
In the Show metrics section select the desired metrics for display.
In order to provide greater flexibility in the Pure Portal for Persons and Organisations to display content that is important to them, it is now possible to configure specific sections of the Person's individual Portal Profile page (i.e. their home page) and the Organisational unit's Portal page. The following sections are now specifically configurable:
Collaboration Map (Configured for entire Organization only)
This represents the first step for the Pure Portal to provide a greater level of flexibility and personalisation.
Personal configurations
To enable Personal users to configure the visibility of Metrics, Secondary affiliations, or to highlight Profile page content, the Administrator must first enable this functionality.
1.
In Pure, open the Administrator tab > Pure Portal tab > Configuration tab (on the page)
2.
Under "Families", click to edit Persons, this will expand the options menu under Persons
3.
Under Persons Portal Configuration, check "Enable personal configuration options for the Portal"
Once enabled, Personal users can simply log into Pure and select:
1.
Edit profile ...
2.
Portal profile tab in the left navigation
3.
Edit as needed
4.
To choose any content the Personal user wishes to highlight (e.g. Research Outputs, Activities, Prizes, etc.), the Personal user needs to:
Choose the content family to edit (based on the icons)
Search for the content they wish to highlight on their Portal profile page (up to 5 items of content can be highlighted). If less than four are selected, Pure will automatically back-fill with the most recent pieces of content and display those.
Note:
If you are currently using the Highlighted CV to "highlight" this content, please continue to do so. Eventually, the Highlighted CV will be discontinued as the Personal Level configurations are built out further.

Fingerprinting improvements
In this release, we have delivered improvements for Fingerprinting:
It is now possible to fingerprint a Persons' Research interest statement
Fingerprint is removed from the Portal if disabled in the backend
Upgrade of TACO service (Fingerprint engine) to version 7.8
Fingerprint research interest statement
If a Research Interest Statement is created by a Person, and added to their Profile Page, this information will automatically be added to the data string that is provided to the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine, and will be reflected in the returned, aggregated fingerprint. The purpose of this is to provide the individual a way to have an interaction with the Fingerprint Engine, while also maintaining the objectivity of the results. A person has the ability to change their Research Interest Statement as they wish.
A person can add a Research Interest Statement by logging into their backend, and selecting Edit Profile. From here, under Curriculum and Research Description, text can be added that describes their research. This is then displayed in the Portal, on the individual's profile page - and is now also reflected in the fingerprint.
Fingerprint removed from Portal if disabled in the backend
In order to maintain continuity between Pure administrative functionality and the Pure Portal, we have ensured that if the fingerprint is turned off in the backend of Pure it will no longer be visible on a Person, Organization or other on the Pure Portal. NOTE: When the fingerprint has been disabled on the Pure Portal, the following features that are dependent on the fingerprint will also be disabled: Copy/Paste Search, Concept Search, Fingerprint Visibility on a Research Output, Award, Project, Equipment, Person, Organization and University.
Upgrade of TACO service (Fingerprint engine) to version 7.8
The Fingerprint Engine (FPE) was updated on August 22, and includes updates to Compendex, Geobase, MESH and NAL, as well as two new sources for indexing. Pure release 5.10 now connects to the updated service in order to ensure that the latest FPE is leveraged by the Portal.
It features updated discipline-specific thesauri such as Compendex, Geobase, Mesh, and NAL, and has two new sources for indexing: a Unified Thesaurus, and a data driven Keyphrase Thesaurus. Existing text classifiers for the labelling with scientific domains and ASJC codes are improved.
As part of our continued efforts to enable the further refinement of search results, we have introduced a new filter to all content families with Concepts attached to them.
To enable the further refinement of Concept search results, a new Concept filter has been included in this release. When a Concept search is conducted for a Research Output, Person, or Project, the list of results can now be further refined by adding additional Concepts via the Concept filter.
Research Output search for the Concept 'vaccines' conducted
Additional Concept of 'Scotland' added, reducing number of matches from 8 to 6
Fingerprint Improvements
As described in the 5.8.2 Release Notes, improvements were made to fingerprinting such that all fingerprints that contained the concepts "Document" or "Text" from the Social Science thesauri, and that did not have an ASJC code, were re-fingerprinted. The re-fingerprinting happened automatically via a job running in Pure.
As part of the 5.9 upgrade we have implemented further improvements to fingerprints, and all fingerprints will be re-fingerprinted. This will not take place directly as part of the upgrade to 5.9, but within a month after the upgrade.
In this release, the use of ASJC codes to detect the proper thesauri has been improved to be more elaborate and fine-grained towards selecting the proper thesauri for the content.
Content must now have both an Abstract and a Title to get a fingerprint. Previously Research Outputs with only a Title were fingerprinted, but this could lead to aggregated fingerprints on the Person and Organisation levels to be biased towards those concepts mentioned in the Title of those Research Outputs.
In most scenarios, this means that aggregated fingerprints for Persons and Organisations now have more concepts associated to them than earlier.
If most of your Research Output records in Pure do not have an Abstract, fingerprints might not be very strong for the associated Persons and Organisations. The best approach would be to add Abstracts where they are available. However, if a significant number of your Research Output records in Pure do not have Abstracts and it is not feasible to add them, then it is possible to change the fingerprinting behaviour so that content without an Abstract will also be fingerprinted. This change must be undertaken by Elsevier staff, so please contact Pure Support if you would like to implement this option.
The Plum Print, produced by Plum Analytics, provides an easy way to see the relative impact of research outputs in each of five categories of metrics: usage, captures, mentions, social media, and citations. In this release, Plum Prints are now integrated with the Pure Portal, visible in both the short render (list view) and detailed render (publication detail view).
By default, Plum Prints are DISABLED in the pure Portal. To enable Plum Prints, go to Administrator > Portal, then select the Configuration tab, and the edit button next to Research Output. In the Metrics section, enable Plum Prints:
This release includes a number of improvements to aid visitor discovery of Open Access publications within the Pure Portal. This includes the display of icons to indicate Open Access status and the presence of an attached document, and the ability to filter for Open Access content. We are also providing the license information as a hyperlink, and the Bibliographical note field is now available for display in the Portal too, enabling customers to show publisher rights statements as required.
Open Access filter
In order to better support visitors in discovering openly accessible content, it is now possible to filter Research Outputs based on accessibility (as per Open Access : Logic for OA Flag (from the 5.8.0 Release Notes)).
Open Access and paperclip icons
Where a Research Output is Open Access (as per Open Access : Logic for OA Flag (from the 5.8.0 Release Notes)), the OA icon is now displayed in the Pure Portal, enabling visitors to easily identify accessible content. The icon is present in all list views, including Search results, Organizations, Persons, etc.
Where a document is attached and visible in the Pure Portal, a paperclip icon is now displayed in the Pure Portal. This icon is present in all list views, including Search Results, Organizations, Persons, etc.
'License to document' for electronic versions displayed as hyperlink
The 'Licence to document' for electronic versions of Research Outputs is now displayed as a hyperlink in the Pure Portal (opening a new browser tab / window), enabling visitors to easily determine their rights to re-use the content and under what conditions.
Bibliographical note
Where the Research Output Bibliographical note field is enabled and populated in the backend, the content of the field is now visible in the Pure Portal, enabling institutions to display rights statements (or any other content populating the field).
Following on from the 5.8.0 release, where Student Theses was added as a content type in the Portal, Danish Student Theses are now also available.
Danish Student Theses are now available for inclusion in the Pure Portal. The Pure Portal will be synchronized to the Student Project submission system (the same process previously used in Pure Custom Portals). The synchronized Student Projects will then be available in the Editor, and workflow, for inclusion in the Pure Portal. Student Theses will be displayed for both profiled Persons who have authored a Student Thesis, as well as Student Theses that are supervised by profiled Persons in the Portal.
Notes:
Danish Student Theses is an independent content type - Research Outputs of type 'Thesis' will be listed in the Portal as Student Thesis
Student Theses are disabled by default - to enable this content type in the Pure Portal go to Administrator > System settings > Portal > View student essays > Enable the setting
Additional external link icons are now available in the Pure Portal, including:
Google Scholar
ORCID
LinkedIn
Research Gate
Available external link icons (displayed under the individual's profile picture) are as follows:
Facebook
ORCID
LinkedIn
Twitter
Google Scholar
Research Gate
Mendeley
Globe icon for custom link types
External links are added via the Person Editor, in the Links section. If a description is provided for a link, then this text will appear in the Portal when the visitor hovers over the relevant icon. If no description is provided, when the visitor hovers, only the name of the site will be displayed (e.g. Facebook).
It is now possible for a Person to display on their profile page their willingness to accept PhD students.
Notes:
Pure must first be configured to include the 'Willingness to accept PhD students' field on the Person record.
Go to : Administrator > System settings > Person
Enable 'Enable willingness to PhD on Person' (by default, this is disabled)
Once enabled, the Person editor will be updated to include the 'Willingness to take PhD students' field. Researchers can then indicate their willingness and details of projects / programmes available.
We have improved the configuration screen for setting up the Google Geocoding API in Pure. The API is used by the Portal map component and by the background job that geocodes addresses.
The new configuration screen is placed in Administrator > System settings > Geocoding.
API Key
The API key will now be validated against both the Google Maps Geocoding API and the Google Maps JavaScript API.
Latest failures
The most recent geocoding failures are listed in this configuration screen along with a link to the affected content items. Failures contain those addresses for which geocoding could not be performed.
Errors
Errors will be logged to the system Job log in Administrator > Jobs > Job log under the name [Geo-Location Job]. Errors occur when the API key cannot be used with the API and when the job runs into unexpected errors. The job log also details all failures (as described above)
This release includes enhancement to the way visitors to Pure interact with Search.
Search as a Concept or Search as Free Text
In the standard Search box, the visitor is now presented with two new options when entering text into the search box. A drop down menu will appear as the text is being typed, enabling the visitor to choose how they wish the search to proceed - either as 1) a Concept search or 2) as a Free Text search. If the visitor does not choose, the search will proceed as it always has.
In addition, the two types of Search are further clarified by hovering the mouse over the information icon on the right, providing definitions for Concept search and Free Text search.
The search results are displayed in a tabbed format, each content that yielded results on separate tabs (i.e. Profiles, Research Units, Research Outputs, etc.). Once the results are produced, it is also possible to change to a "Free Text" search of the input text by simply clicking the highlighted text next to "Did you want to search for_______ as free text"
Advanced search
An Advanced Search option has been introduced to the search capabilities in Pure, allowing the visitor to further refine their search results.
The Advanced Search functionality is accessed by hovering the mouse over the "gear" icon to the right of the Search box.
A visitor can now enter text in the following ways:
Search "With all words" (any text entered will be used as an inclusion statement) (AND Search)
Search "With the exact Phrase
Search "With at least one of the words" (OR Search)
Search "Without the words" (exclude these words) (a visitor is only able to add text here if one of the other search boxes has been filled in)
Search results will then be displayed at the bottom of same page as Advanced Search
A visitor can decide to search either as a Concept or Free Text, and narrow the results by the type of content available in Pure.
Content header improvements
This release includes a re-design of the appearance of the content type header. Prior to 5.8, if all content types were enabled for the Portal, the types would be displayed on multiple lines in the content header. This is now resolved; when more than six content types are enabled, a menu item for 'More' will be appear, and when hovered over, the additional types (and counts) are displayed.
Before
5.8 improvement
It is also possible for Administrators to edit the order that content types appear in the content type header. By default, the order is as follows:
Persons (Profiles)
Organizational units (Research Units)
Research Outputs
Equipment
Projects
Datasets
Prizes
Activities
Courses
Press / Media
Impacts
Student Theses
To edit the order of content types in the Portal:
go to Administrator > Portal > Configuration
scroll down to 'Families'
to change the order in which content types are displayed in the content type header, use the up or down arrow next to the desired content type to change where it resides
to add or remove a content type, please contact Pure Support via JIRA
This release includes the removal of the RELX logo from the footer, the ability to include an institutional logo in the footer, and the introduction of an Institutional Contact.
Portal footer
The RELX logo has been removed from the footer page, and the ability to add an institutional logo to the footer is now available, providing institutions with greater branding options in the Portal.
To add an institutional logo to the footer, go to Administrator > Portal > Styling and layout tab, and scroll down to the 'Skin' section. Upload your logo file and save the configuration at the bottom of the page.
Contact page
You are now able to add institutional contact information in the Portal footer.
To add institutional contact details to the Portal, go to Administrator > Portal > Styling and layout tab, and scroll down to the 'Contact' section. Enable Institutional Contact and provide the email address (mandatory), phone, and any additional information.
If you would prefer a direct link in the footer to the institutional email address, rather than to a contact form, enable the 'direct link to the institutional e-mail address'.
This release includes the ability to display Student Theses as their own content type within the Pure Portal.
Student Theses will be displayed for both profiled Persons who have authored a Student Thesis, as well as Student Theses that are supervised by profiled Persons in the Portal. This content is not displayed by default.
Notes:
Student Theses is an independent content type - Research Outputs of type 'Thesis' will continue to be listed in the Portal as Research Outputs
Request Copy functionality for embargoed electronic versions of Research Outputs
This release includes the ability to Portal visitors to request a copy of an electronic version of an output that is not displayed in the Portal due to embargo restrictions.
The purpose of this feature is to enable Portal visitors to request a copy of a full text document (e.g. Author's Accepted Manuscript) when the document cannot be made available for download via the Portal due to embargo restrictions.
In order to offer this functionality for Portal visitors, the following must be actioned:
1.
Enable Request for Copy functionality in Portal configuration
go to Administrator > Portal > Configuration, and scroll to 'Families'
select 'Edit' for the Research output family
tick 'Enable Request for Copy links for documents under embargo
choose whether to include Restricted documents
create default e-mail subject lines and bodies
2.
Add 'Request for copy E-mail' type to the University Organizational unit
Go to Master data > Organizational units
Open the Organizational unit editor for the unit you wish to enable this functionality for
Typically the highest level unit (e.g. University) will be chosen, and all 'children' under this parent organization will then have the Request for Copy functionality enabled
Scroll down to Electronic addresses
Select 'Add Email' and create a new email address for Type = Request for copy E-mail
Once the Request for Copy functionality is enabled, all Research Outputs with status embargoed will have a Request for Copy e-mail link available. When the embargo passes, the Portal page will automatically update to make the file available directly in the Portal.
We now display Person title(s) (e.g. Dr, Professor) in the Pure Portal.
From 5.8, the Pure Portal now displays titles from the Person record. Where multiple titles have been input, they will appear in the Portal in the order they appear in the Person editor.

Updated display of Datasets
The display of Datasets in the Pure Portal has been been updated to accommodate recent updates to the data model. The revised display exists in the Overview, Organization, and Persons Profile pages.
Google Maps integration
Google's updated Terms of Use mean that from 5.7.0 (4.26.0), maps will no longer be displayed in the Custom Portal unless an API key has been set up as per the instructions below. Further, it will take time for the Pure job to run through all existing addresses and geolocations and re-plot them, therefore there will be a delay before all map markers are available again in the Pure Portal.
Google have updated their Terms of Use such that Pure Portals are unable to display Google Maps map markers as they have done previously. If you wish to continue showing Google Maps in your Custom Portal, you need to follow these steps:
Once an API key has been obtained, add the key to Pure as shown in the screenshot:
Notes:
Once you have added the API key to Pure, a background job will be generated. This job is lightweight, will run every hour, and cannot be scheduled or accessed like other cron jobs.
Once the job starts running, it will start updating geolocations (not only re-plotting map markers in the Custom Portal from existing geolocations input, but also generating geolocations where only an address has been provided in the backend)
Google places a limit on how many queries (2,400) the job can make each day and this means that the geolocations in Pure will not all be updated immediately, but will gradually be updated in the Custom Portal.
Once all geolocations have been updated, Portal performance will improve
In response to customer feedback, Public CV functionality has been re-instated in the Pure Portal.
When Public CVs are enabled and a Public CV is created for a Person, visitors to a Person's Profile page will be able to view and download the Public CV from the Pure Portal.
This release includes additional Pure Portal enhancements, including:
Fingerprinting : ability to suppress concepts and thesauri on an Organization unit
Display keywords for all content types
Display whether the visitor has access to ScienceDirect DOIs
Configurable Pure Portal footer
Altmetrics now opens into a new window
Fingerprinting : ability to suppress concepts and thesauri on an Organizational unit
It is now possible to de-select concepts and thesauri for an Organizational unit, similar to how it is performed for Persons. This is accomplished in the backend, by Administrators:
Open the editor for the Organisational Unit whose fingerprint you wish to change
Select 'Fingerprint' from the left-hand navigation of the editor
The Fingerprint window will open.
Place your cursor over the concept you wish to remove from the Fingerprint.
Click the red 'x' next to the concept.
Continue this process until you have removed all concepts you wish to remove.
Click 'Save' at the bottom of the screen.
The concept will be removed from the Fingerprint, and the next time you open the editor, the concept will appear under 'Omitted concepts'.
To add a concept back, find the concept in the list of 'Omitted concepts' and select the green "+" next to the concept.
Continue this process for all concepts you wish to re-instate.
Click 'Save' at the bottom of the screen.
Display keywords for all content types
It is now possible to display keywords in the Pure Portal for all content types where keywords are available in the Pure backend. When displayed, the keywords appear only in the 'long render' format of the content (i.e. on the record's own Portal page).
Notes:
When setting up the keyword configuration in Pure, Administrators can specify whether to limit access to the keyword group. Only those with 'No limit' are displayed in the Pure Portal.
By default, all keyword groups with 'No limit' are shown in the Portal
Display whether the visitor has access to ScienceDirect DOIs
ScienceDirect offer a service that can automatically detect if a visitor has access to the full-text file available via the DOI (e.g. if their IP address is registered to a subscribing institution). We have linked the Pure Portal up with this service so that, if a visitor is entitled to view the full-text file available via the ScienceDirect DOI, this will be shown in the Pure Portal. If the visitor hovers over the tick mark, they are informed that they have access to the document.
Configurable Pure Portal footer
The Pure Portal footer is now configurable to hide Elsevier and RELX branding and to change the section line colour from the standard orange to the default colour scheme of your Pure Portal.
To configure this setting, go to Administrator > Portal > Help section > Enable Elsevier and Relex logo in footer (as per screenshot above)
Altmetrics now opens into a new window
In order to provide a better visitor experience, where Altmetrics are enabled in the Pure Portal, when a visitor selects the Altmetric for the content, a new browser window will be opened.
The 5.6 release includes a number of enhancements to the Pure Portal, including:
More refined location features
Redesigned search experience
Enhanced support for Open Access
Display of Grant IDs for Projects
Additionally, the Pure Portal is now available as a product for Pure Integrated customers.
More refined location features:
The Collaboration Map now shows points of collaboration with individual states in the United States
It is now possible for your institution to be appropriately located in the Collaboration Map, based on longitude and latitude. Just add the coordinates of your home institution in the address information section in the organisational unit editor (the Geospatial Point field)
Redesigned search experience
Based on feedback from customers, this redesign addresses problems seen with search everything / concepts
Search everything will take you to one of two result pages:
If the search string matches one or more concepts, the profiles page is displayed, listing persons who have publications and fingerprints matching one or more of the concepts. On the page we clearly indicate that we believe the search to be for concepts, and give the user the option to change to an ordinary search instead.
If there are no matching concepts, we show the Search All page with a tabbed listing for each of the families that have matching content (Profiles, Research Units, Research Output etc.)
As a consequence off the redesign it is no longer possible to make a specific search for concepts, because concepts are automatically recognised both in the “Everything” search, as well as in the content type searches.
The Portal now includes Open Access support such as:
display of Open Access logo where content is publicly available
enabling the download of electronic file versions
Display of Grant IDs for Projects
If you would like to display Grant IDs for Projects on your Portal, please contact the Pure Support Team (pure-support@atira.dk.), or create a JIRA requesting this functionality
Notes:
PRS customers:
We will make every effort auto populate the State for US collaboration partners. However, due to the nature of Scopus affiliation data, this will not always be possible
If you are a Pure Integrated customer and are interested in a quote for the price of the Pure Portal, please reach out to your Elsevier account manager. If you have any technical queries, please contact us at pure-support@atira.dk.
