Pure Academy: Reporting in PurePure Academy: Reporting in Pure

Here you will find training and documentation on the new report module that is the recommended reporting engine for Pure from 5.14.0. and going forward.

From Pure 5.14, we recommend to start getting acquainted with the so-called "New Report Module" - which has been in technical preview status for 2018. We recommend that you create any new reports in this and also start thinking about creating your existing reports in the new module. The "classic" Report module will be supported for some time going forward, but at some point it will be deprecated and we recommend that you start familiarizing yourself with the new one before long.

Foundation Classes

This three part series will review how to use and build both a data table and data story within the new report module and is aimed for those users who have been using the old report module and are familiar with the basics of reporting.

Note

  • With 5.14, the new reporting module, was released in it's beta phase because we believe it is mature enough to use, but some functions are not fully developed and are still being worked on.
  • This a foundation class on the new report module; we plan to have more specialized classes with specific cases in the future.
  • The server used in this class has limited data, which will explain the low numbers you will see throughout this vide

Helpful Definitions

These will be common words you will hear throughout the classes on the new report module.

Term Term in old report module Definition
Workspace Report This incorporates both the Data table and any associated Data story (where one has been created), and is the level at which you can save/share reports (you share or save a workspace).
Data table Columns The area in which you define the columns that constitute your report and view the rows of data that match your filter settings.
Data story - A series of visualizations (and optional explanatory text) based the columns and rows available in a data table.
Data story element - A single visualization or text element within a data story.
Value Projection The metadata field that is exposed for the record. For example, for a research output this may be Title, Managing organizational unit, ISBN (Print), etc.
Filter Filter Restrict the number of rows shown in a data table by removing any rows where the values do not fall within this filter. For example, you may want to restrict a list of research outputs by applying the filters Year and Current publication status so that your workspace only includes rows where the publication status was changed to Published within a certain year range.
Split - Break a count column (i.e. where the number represents the count of entities) into multiple columns that show how the count is derived from several buckets. For example, if the total count of research outputs managed by an organizational unit is 100, you may want to apply a Year split to see that 40 are from 2016, 50 are from 2018, and 10 are from 2019.
Expand mode - Expand any row into multiple rows if there is a column has chosen Values that cannot easily be rendered as a single row. This exposes the individual values but leads to repeat information in other columns.
For example, if you count the number of Press/Media on Persons, you receive a number. But if you change the Value on that Press/Media column to be Title, this can no longer be aggregated into one value, and this is rendered as "Example title (+2 more)". If you are in Expand mode, one row is shown for each Press/Media record, even though the Person rows will appear to be repeated.
Driver variable - The 'driver variable' is the content type in the left-most column in the reporting workspace. It is chosen on the Create new workspace tab when creating a report and cannot be changed/or deleted once the report is created. Choosing the right driver variable can simplify the process of creating your report.
Column set - Several columns in a data table can relate to the same entity, e.g. by adding values on the same entity in another column. You cannot filter a single column in a column set, rather the filtering applies to the entities that the column set represent.
