Web accessibility
Pure Portal accessibility updates
We continue to work towards being fully WCAG 2.1 AA compliant by ensuring accessible design in new features. In addition to this, we implemented the following improvements to existing features:
The Pure Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) report has been updated. The Pure Portal underwent accessibility testing on the 25th of July, 2022. You can access full results of this assessment through a link included in the 'About web accessibility' section found in the footer of the Portal.
The analysis and results showed:
- Portal accessibility fully supports 43 items and partially supports the remaining 7.
- Partially supported areas are primarily due to external dependencies like Altmetric and PlumX widgets, which the Pure team is not in control of.
- The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) official logos do not have high enough color contrast. Although a black and white alternative is available, in this particular case a decision was made to promote recognizability over accessibility.
All of the partially compliant areas were reviewed by our accessibility experts. While most areas cannot be fully fixed in the current setup (primarily due to external dependencies), we managed to make one of these areas (1.3.1 Info and Relationships) fully compliant.
Pure Core: Administration
Record log and Pure API modules enabled by default
The Record log module is a module that, with appropriate configuration, can share a subset of the data in Pure with external services in a controlled way. After enabling this module, no data is shared per default. It requires configuration and correspondence with Elsevier to set up. This means that a Pure that previously had this module disabled, will function the same as with the module enabled. Currently, the Record log module can only support sharing data with other Elsevier services, if support for non-Elsevier services is added, it will be announced when ready. The Record Log setup is available under Administrator > Record Log
The API module covers the write API functionality. This is the API that will replace the 524 read-only API when it is feature complete. Usage of the write API requires configuration, API keys and setup of access definitions to work correctly. After this module is enabled, no access is automatically granted and a Pure that previously had this module disabled, will function the same as with the module enabled. General documentation on how to use the Pure API is available here. The Pure API setup is available under Administrator > Pure API
These modules have existed in Pure for many years and is used by several of our Pure clients. The change to making them default enabled, is because of the increased need for these modules as part of our integrations with other Elsevier products/services and the new Pure Portal.
Enabling or disabling a module, currently requires a restart of Pure, causing unnecessary downtime. Having these modules enabled by default makes it more seamless to try some of our new services, when available to you as a Pure client.
Dataset file upload maximum size
The maximum file upload functionality for Datasets has been increased to account for larger files. With the addition of CloudFlare services to manage safer interactions with Pure, we have implemented a file ‘chunking’ approach to uploading files to Pure. The Dataset content type can be configured to allow large file uploads, with reliable upload of files up to 20GB in ~60mins using Firefox and Chrome.
To configure maximum file upload sizes on Datasets, got to Administrator > Datasets > Configuration and update the maximum allowable upload size (in MB).

Integrations
Certified ORCID Service Provider
Over the past year, we have collaborated closely with ORCID to become an ORCID Certified Service Provider. We are pleased to announce that since the end of 2024, we have been granted this certification.
The ORCID Certified Service Provider program ensures that Pure adheres to best practices within the research ecosystem, demonstrating our commitment to supporting open research infrastructure. This certification guarantees our clients that ORCID is utilized correctly within Pure for importing, exporting, and exposing content effectively.
We are excited about this achievement and look forward to continuing to enhance the experience for our users while upholding the highest standards in research management.

Deprecation of Scielo
We would like to inform our users that due to recent changes in the Scielo API, we will be removing Scielo as an import source in Pure. The New API does not support adequate searching capabilities, making it unsustainable for our current import processes.
As a result, Scielo will no longer be available as an import source. We will continue to monitor the development of the Scielo API, and should improvements be made that allow for proper searching, we will consider re-implementing it as an import source in the future.
REF2029
To help prepare for REF and to manage reviews, we have added a bulk upload functionality to assign reviewers to reviews in Pure. This functionality uses a spreadsheet to upload the information to Pure. It is possible to assign a review template in the process also. See more about the functionality and how to prepare the spreadsheet at Bulk assign reviewers
