Why are only a few concepts showing in my fingerprint? Why are only a few concepts showing in my fingerprint?

What

You appear to only have a few concepts in your fingerprint, even though you are linked to many research outputs with many more associated concepts.

Why

Fingerprinting works by aggregating the results from a researcher's research interests, research outputs and prizes. Each time a new research output is added, the aggregated fingerprint will be recalculated when the job “Person and Organisation Fingerprint Aggregation” is run.

Administrators can configure some of the fingerprint settings here: Administrator -> System settings -> fingerprint service. If these aggregation values are changed, it will affect your fingerprinting results. This can result in fewer or more concepts being displayed in your fingerprint.

We recommend always starting with the following default settings:

Setting Default value What the setting does
Start Year 0 These settings limit which fingerprints are included in the aggregations.
NB: they do not limit what is fingerprinted, just what is aggregated.
End Year 9999
Amount of concepts per thesauri in aggregated fingerprint for Organisations 100 These set the number of concepts we store for each content type, so the higher the number, the more concepts can be seen under each type.

If you set e.g. 5 for persons, even if a person has more than 5 concepts attached to their work, only 5 will be linked to them in the aggregation.
Amount of concepts per thesauri in aggregated fingerprint for Persons 50
Amount of concepts per thesauri in aggregated fingerprint for Other types 200
Remove concepts with a weighted rank below the specified percentage 5 This setting removes concepts that are peripheral to the actual work a person is doing e.g. if your main work is in chemistry, and you co-author a publication about the effects of a certain chemical on mice, you might not want 'mice' in your fingerprint, as your contribution was on the chemistry, not the actual work with mice.

If you set this percentage too high, it can result in a small number of concepts appearing, as anything with a weighted rank below the specified threshold will be removed.

Once you have these settings in place, you will need to run the job “Person & Organisation Fingerprint Aggregation” to see any changes on the persons and organisations. You can fine tune the settings and retest until you are happy with the resulting fingerprints. NB: You will need to rerun the job each time you change a value to see the result.
