What is OAI?What is OAI?

Here is some basic insides on what the OAI format is.

OAI = Open Archives Initiative

The Open Archives Initiative develops and promotes interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. OAI has its roots in the open access and institutional repository movements. Continued support of this work remains a cornerstone of the Open Archives program. Over time, however, the work of OAI has expanded to promote broad access to digital resources for eScholarship, eLearning, and eScience.
Source: https://www.openarchives.org/

With Pure, OAI is mainly used for harvesting content from Pure to other systems. E.g.:

  • EThOS in the UK (Search over 500,000 doctoral theses with British library)
  • http://www.forskningsdatabasen.dk (Danish NationalResearch Database)
  • WorldCat (Digital Collections Gateway) (OCLC a global library cooperative)
  • Ex Libris Primo (locally installed system on universities)
  • Narcis (National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System) (DUTCH)
  • JISC Monitor (see What is Jisc)

The OAI format offers content about persons, research output and student thesis

Different formats gives different results, currently Pure supports:

Name of format (full name/responsible organisation)

  • OAI_DC (Dublin Core)
  • NL_DIDL (Dutch format)
  • DDF_MXD (Dansk digital fællesråd/ Danish Research Database - Metadata Exchange Format for Documents)
  • MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema)

Check the your server to see which formats are available currently. We do support other formats as well, but not
on all data models.

A list of available formats can be found using this OAI call:
https://your.server.name.here/ws/oai?verb=ListMetadataFormats

OAI calls looks like this:
https://your.server.name.here/ws/oai?verb=ListSets get a list of the data sets supported by the server

https://your.server.name.here/ws/oai?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=oai_dc&set=publications:all
